Meet Sunny Wu
We spoke with Sunny Wu, the founder of OurCommonplace, a marketplace that offers carefully selected brands that are true to their standards, such as women-owned brands, sustainable brands, toxic-free brands, ethical brands, BIPOC-owned brands, and cruelty-free brands. The goal is to ensure that they constantly strive to be more conscious of their production efforts, treatment of workers, and social and environmental impact.

SUNNY, TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO CREATE OURCOMMONPLACE.
“Being someone who was on their own sustainable journey, I was in the process of searching for sustainable brands when I realized that there wasn't a value-driven one stop shop that was also fashion-forward and I realized what huge hearts all of these founders have for the world and how many incredible brands are out there. It then solidified my decision to launch an ethical and sustainable marketplace that housed items that have a product and value first approach. This is essentially what started ourCommonplace.”
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO CREATE A MARKETPLACE WHERE SUSTAINABILITY AND EMPOWERMENT FEMALE BUSINESS FOUNDERS IS THE MAIN LANGUAGE AND PREOCCUPATION?
“It's crucial to shed light on topics such as gender equality, and responsible consumption and production. Both topics that have so much history rooted in our society with the need to propel us towards a world that is more equitable and forward-thinking.”
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A BUSINESS TO BE ETHICAL?
“Companies or manufacturers must have baseline initiatives that ensure fair wages are being paid and establish decent working conditions for the employees.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN NATURE?
“I actually went to school in Malibu, but I prefer the mountains and desert over the beach any day. My favorite national park is Sequoia National Park, but I love being in a lush environment, with greenery everywhere I look. Even when I'm in a city like New York City, I love the serenity of Central Park.”
IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, WHAT DO YOU DO TO BE MORE ECO-RESPONSIBLE?
“I’ve switched to an electric car, in addition to eating local and bringing reusable grocery bags every time I go to the store. I’ve also started investing in less plastic based beauty products. My next goal is to get into composting!”
ANY LAST ADVICE TO ADOPT A MORE SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE?
“The first and most important thing is to be conscious of your purchases. Becoming aware is already taking a big step in the right direction. A step that you can take everyday towards a sustainable lifestyle is creating less food waste and cutting down on meat as meat consumption is one of the biggest polluting factors. Another step to work towards a sustainable lifestyle is to reuse when you can.”
