We spoke with Sunny Wu, the founder of OurCommonplace, a marketplace that offers carefully selected brands that are true to their standards, such as women-owned brands, sustainable brands, toxic-free brands, ethical brands, BIPOC-owned brands, and cruelty-free brands. The goal is to ensure that they constantly strive to be more conscious of their production efforts, treatment of workers, and social and environmental impact.
SUNNY, TELL US HOW YOU CAME UP WITH THE IDEA TO CREATE OURCOMMONPLACE.
"I was looking for sustainable brands when I realized that there was no single store that was value driven, but also fashion driven. I realized that all of these founders had a big heart for the world and that there were many incredible brands out there. This reinforced my decision to launch an ethical and sustainable marketplace offering items with a product and value-driven approach. This is essentially what gave birth to ourCommonplace."
"I wanted to fill a gap in the market for fashion-forward women who were looking to shop ethically and sustainably."
WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO CREATE A MARKETPLACE WHERE SUSTAINABILITY AND EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS IS THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE AND CONCERN?
"It is essential to shed light on topics such as gender equality, responsible consumption and production. Two topics that have so much history embedded in our society with the need to propel us toward a more equitable and forward-looking world."
WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR A COMPANY TO BE ETHICAL?
"Companies or manufacturers must have grassroots initiatives that ensure fair wages are paid and establish decent working conditions for employees."
IN YOUR PERSONAL LIFE, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO BE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY?
"I've switched to an electric car, in addition to eating local and bringing reusable grocery bags every time I go to the store. I also started investing in plastic-based beauty products. My next goal is to get into composting!"
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE IN NATURE?
"I actually went to school in Malibu, but I much prefer the mountains and desert to the beach. My favorite national park is Sequoia National Park, but I love being in a lush environment with greenery everywhere I look. Even when I'm in a city like New York, I love the serenity of Central Park."
ANY FINAL TIPS FOR LIVING A MORE SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE?
"The first and most important thing is to be conscious of your purchases. Being aware is already a big step in the right direction. One step you can take every day towards a sustainable lifestyle is to create less food waste and reduce meat because meat consumption is one of the biggest contributors to pollution. Another step toward sustainable living is to reuse when you can."
